Leadership is a relationship among a group of people, where members inspire each other to work together to achieve a goal shared by all. Leadership is all about creating positive change. It is important because it in order to achieve change, a group needs to be organized and work together efficiently and effectively. Leadership is what organizes people and enables them to work well together.
I want to learn what makes leadership effective. I want to learn what skills leaders have, how they go about inspiring a group, and how the group affects leadership. I want to learn how to lead without charisma, because I am not an outgoing or charismatic person. I also want to learn more about how leadership is changing to meet the changing needs of society. I grew up believing leadership was about a person in a position of power telling subordinates what to do. I have already learned from this class that this is not how it always is or should be, and I would like to continue learning about the different theories of leadership and what it means today.
Leadership skills greatly increase the number of opportunities in life and in the workplace. I hope to improve my understanding of leadership and improve my skills so I can become an effective leader. I’d like to feel confident in managerial roles in the future, and I believe learning how to lead will help with that a lot.
My best leadership experience occurred last semester in Models II when we were assigned a group project. I unofficially led the group. We were working towards the common goal of getting an A. This was pretty near the end of the semester, so I had a good grasp of how good at programming each of my group mates were. I delegated tasks, playing to their strengths, asking for their input, and making sure everyone understood and was ok with their parts. If someone struggled with programming, I offered them a simpler section of code to write and more of the final report to work on. The strong programmers got more challenging code and less of the written report. We all worked together and helped each other with our parts when necessary. Our group was finishing tasks ahead of schedule because we were good at the parts we were doing and we enjoyed our work. We were efficient and producing quality work and ended up getting a good grade.
