During spring semester of 2016, I took the honors seminar Exploring Leadership. This seminar covered many different leadership theories through readings and classroom discussion, and students were able to apply these theories as after school tutors at Hughes High School. I took this course because I know that in the future in order to move forward with my career, I will need to be a strong leader, but taking charge and being the decision maker do not come naturally to me. Though this course did not directly teach me these skills, it did teach me that there are multiple ways to lead, some more suited to my personality than others. For example, the way that I feel I will use most and be most comfortable with is identifying my followers’ strengths and giving them tasks that align with these strengths, especially when their strengths overlap with my weaknesses. This way followers are helping to the best of ability and I am not responsible for the things I am not good at. Empowering followers was a huge concept from this course, which sounds much more doable to me than being a dictator and controlling everything.
This course taught me that leadership is tailored to the leader and the followers and it’s not just about one person telling everyone else what to do. The concepts we covered have helped me feel more confident in my ability to lead, which is the reason I took the course in the first place.
Below you will find blog posts I completed throughout the semester. They show my growth as I completed the course and discovered the different types of leadership, my strengths, and who I am as a leader.
